How do I record stock returns?
Description

Sometimes you may need to record damaged or faulty stock items that have been returned to your company, or that you're returning to your supplier. In Sage 50 Professional it's easy to do this using the Returns option. Let's take a look.

TIP: To record returns of normal undamaged stock, or if the damaged stock will be refunded/credit noted either record a product credit note or make an adjustment in to correct the stock levels.

  1. Click Products and services then select the required product and click Returns

  2. Complete the Returns window as follows:

CodeThe product you selected appears here. If required, you can choose a different product from the drop-down list.
DescriptionThe description of the product appears here.
TypeFrom the drop-down list, choose one of the following:
    • DI - Damages In - This represents goods being returned to your company as damaged or faulty. Because the goods are faulty or damaged, the Qty in stock, sales value and sales qty figures are not updated when you post the transaction.
    • DO - Damages Out - This represents goods you are returning to your supplier for repair or replacement. Because the goods are being returned for repair or replacement, the Qty in stock, sales value and sales qty figures are not updated when you post the transaction.
    • WO - Write Off - Use this to record stock that is being written off. This type of transaction makes an adjustment to the stock levels and is the equivalent of an adjustment out.
The DI and DO type don't affect the stock levels as they're used when the stock is going to be replaced or sold as a damaged item.
RefEnter a reference for this stock return.
    DateEnter the required date.
ReasonEnter details of why the goods have been returned. For example, you could enter 'Scratched'.
QuantityEnter the quantity of goods that have been returned.
  3. Click Save then click Close.

That's it. You've recorded the return.

NOTE: Your nominal ledger stock values are adjusted when posting your opening and closing stock journals.
