Proxy servers and Sage software
Description

Proxy servers control the flow of information between networks, typically a local network and the Internet. A proxy server comprises either hardware, software or both.

The main purpose of a proxy server is to regulate access to other networks while maintaining security.

When a networked computer accesses external information, like a web page, it passes through a proxy server that retrieves and delivers the data.

How does this affect Sage software?

With the introduction of Automatic Updates, Sage software accesses web-based resources more than ever before. It's likely that such requests pass through proxy servers.

You can enter proxy server settings in your Sage software, on the menu bar click Tools then click Internet Options then Network Settings.

We recommend using the browser settings, although you can enter proxy settings in this window. If required, your IT support will undertake this task.

URLs to exclude on a Proxy server

Firewall and antivirus software can interfere with the download and installation of software updates and other Sage services, for example Sage Remote Data Access. You should add the following URLs to Windows trusted sites (internet options > Security > Trusted Sites).

To minimise any issues, you can configure your firewall and antivirus software to permit access to the following URLs.

Sage 50 Payroll Legislation service

The payroll software uses the following two USLs when checking for updated legislation.

  • http://www.sage.co.uk/services/taxbandupdate.aspx - to check for tax and NI changes
  • http://www.sage.co.uk/services/minimumwageupdate.aspx - to check for minimum wage changes
