This message may appear for the following reasons:

  • The file is already open in another application

To resolve the issue, close the relevant application and try to import again.

  • Formatting issues with the Excel file

In Excel, save the file as CSV (MS-DOS) (*.csv) and import using the Comma-separated (*.csv) option.

If the issue persists, to troubleshoot the problem, copy the first row of the import into a new Excel sheet and try and import this. If this works, it suggests there are problems in the formatting of the original Excel sheet. Try the same method for blocks of data, until you find the problem. For a list of other file import errors that might now appear, please refer to the File import Errors article.
