Windows permissions for Sage 50 Payroll Ireland

Resolution

If Sage 50 Payroll Ireland works when you’re signed in as an administrator but not as a regular user, check your NTFS permissions. Give all Sage users access to the program and data folders.


Set the correct permissions

Each user needs Modify permission for the following folders:

  • The Sage 50 Payroll Ireland program folder and all subfolders
  • The Sage 50 Payroll Ireland data folder and all subfolders
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Sage Ireland Payroll and all subfolders

 NOTE: If your computer doesn’t have a Program Files (x86) folder, browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sage Ireland Payroll. 

Keep Full Control for the Administrators group on every folder and file.


Find your program folder

  1. Right-click the Sage 50 Payroll Ireland icon on your desktop.
  2. Select properties.
  3. In Start in, check the path and note the tax year folder:
    Example: If you see C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage Payroll\2025, note C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage Payroll\.

Find your data folder

  1. Right-click the Sage 50 Payroll Ireland icon on your desktop.
  2. Select Properties, then choose Open File Location.
  3. Double-click dataloc.ini.
  4. Note the data path location for the relevant year.
    Example: If you see C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage Payroll\2025, note C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage Payroll\.

Change Windows permissions

If you use a domain, your IT team can create a Sage Users group and apply the same permissions. To update permissions manually:

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Press Windows key + X, then select File Explorer.
  3. Browse to the folder you want to update.
  4. Right-click the folder, then select Properties.
  5. Select the Security tab, then Edit.
  6. Choose the user or group, for example, Everyone.
  7. In the Allow column, select Modify.
    Windows automatically selects Read & execute, List folder contents, and Read and Write.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Select Advanced, then Change Permissions.
  10. Select Replace all child objects permissions with inheritable permissions from this object.
  11. Select OK, then Yes.
  12. Close all open windows.
